Play is critical in helping children develop both mental and physical skills, and toys are an ideal way we encourage them to express their creativity. Unfortunately, many of today’s toys do not promote the same level of creativity and exercise that the classics of yesteryear provided. If you are concerned that your child is not learning all that they should, then consider adding a few old-time toys to their collection. Not only will you help them develop more, but you will be able to relive those moments of simple happiness as your own children enjoy playing with those same toys that were your favorites so many years ago.
Too many parents look at the toys they grew up with and think their kids will just find them old-fashioned. Perhaps they have forgotten how much fun they had themselves with those great toys. Another common misconception is that many of these toys are unsafe, though modern technology has made many of them much safer. In fact, many of the toys we grew up with are still popular with young children who have a chance to try them out. Such popular outdoor activities as baseball, roller skating, bike riding and even hula hoops are still a sure winner with most children.
One great retro toy that has been increasing in popularity recently is the all-steel pedal car. Today’s versions include some extra safety measures that you will not remember from your old model, but they still provide that same wonderful thrill of riding around the neighborhood in your own car. Many of today’s cars hark back to our own childhood, with designs borrowed from those classic 1960′s models. There are few modern toys that can match an all-steel pedal car for durability, ease of use and just plain old fun.
For toys to enjoy inside, consider a set of Lego for your child. Lego has tailored their line for girls and boys alike to enjoy various building possibilities, including sets that will make luxury homes or palaces. However, even simpler versions of building block, such as the wooden building block, can still bestow a wealth of imagination and creativity. With so many technologically advanced toys on the market today, parents can forget that children will use virtually anything for play.
Wooden play objects are another classic toy that can never go out of style. Unfortunately, most parents do not realize that wooden toys are still popular and, even further, that they are still available for purchase. Many Internet stores sell a variety of wooden toys, including building blocks, rocking horses, and doll houses. As enjoyable as those toys were years ago, there is little reason to think that kids of today would not enjoy them just as well. As years pass, there is no doubt that the list of “classic toys” will continue to grow, as more durable and loved toys enter the market. However, the toys above have surely earned their place on the list, after being loved by children for many generations.
