Blizzard has always seemed to have a love / hate relationship with the Priest class that goes back and forth from time to time.
Many believe that the Priest class should be regarded and built as the most powerful healing class in the game because they are so limited in other capacities.
This is really an uneducated view of priests in World Of Warcraft as the shadow spec can be one of the most prolific DPS players in all of WoW if played properly.
Check out any decent WoW Priest leveling guide and you will see many of them recommend actually leveling in a Shadow spec because it makes life as a low level so much easier.
The Discipline talent build is a great tank healer but is often overlooked as raid heals because the damage mitigation does not show up in recount healing charts unless you know what you are looking for in stats.
Holy Priests are really the utility healers of WoW because they never really seem to have a solid role in group raiding. A very effective party healer yet many players seem to have mana issues if they do not consult a good WoW Priest leveling guide and build their talent spec properly.
In PVP you can really play any of the three viable talent option depending on what you like to do as a player.
If you are into healing everyone loves to see an effective Holy Priest show up in the battlegrounds although it seems to be a rare occurrence.
Discipline works very well in PVP situations and has long been the most popular choice among players that spend a ton of time in battlegrounds or Arena play as you can heal as well as deal out a fair amount of damage.
Oddly enough I have always thought the least effective talent build in Battlegrounds has been the Shadow build because it relies so heavily on AoE damage that simply does not work that well in PVP situations.
It also lacks any real viable healing options because of rapid mana drain that you cannot even help out your friends in a pinch situation.
Hopefully in the Cataclysm expansion Priests will gain a more prominent role and take their place as the best healers in the game.
Most believe it always should have been this way although Blizzard seems intent on letting more “sexy” classes remain atop the healing charts because I guess they are more fun to play.
Who really can argue that a Shaman or the highly versatile druid are way more fun options since the addition or duel spec talent builds. Even a Paladin can tank and heal or DPS and heal on a more effective level than the lowly World Of Warcraft Priest.
