The First Amendment (Amendment I) to the United States Constitution is part of the Bill of Rights. The amendment prohibits the making of any law impeding or infringing on the freedom of speech.
Something that important, one would believe amending or impinging on those rights would be screamed by every newspaper, radio and TV station in the land. So why is it, I only read it in The Nation? Where is the outrage? Where are the protestors?
You can be sent to jail for fifteen years merely advocating for peace and human rights based to the Supreme Court of the United States ruling. The court ruled on June 21, 2010 that the First Amendment does not protect anyone advocating, including speech, assistance for peace and human rights to any organization deemed a terrorist organization by the United States. The court ruled, for the first time in history, that Congress can make it a crime to advocate for wholly lawful, nonviolent ends.
It is a crime to write an amicus brief (court paper) in support of a so designated group, assist it before any public body or even publish an op-ed about the group.I fear for my prison
The Nation goes on to say, in the eyes of the Supreme Court, multinational corporations must be allowed to spend millions on political campaigns, but a human rights activist can be sent to jail for pursuing peace.
The issue now is, who knows which organizations the United States list as terrorist organizations? Further, who determines that and what are their qualifications to do so? What constitutes a terrorist organization and what are the justifications for designating them as such?
How long will it be until any organization or person not agreeing with United States policy, domestic or foreign, is labeled a terrorist? This is a much bigger deal than the publicity it has been given. If you disagree with the label the United States government has stuck on some organization then you are forbidden to advocate for that group in any way, shape or form. There is no right to disagree. How frightening is that?
This is the tale about how to boil a frog. If you just drop it in boiling water it will jump out and hop away. If you put it in tepid water and raise the heat a degree or two at a time it won’t notice, and finally it is sitting in the boiling water.
Our rights are being eroded a degree or two at a time and this is one that should bring a lot more exposure than it is getting.
There is no question that the United States government is all powerful. We have seen that several times when they advocate for “children’s safety” and innocents are slaughtered and no federal agents of the government ever stand for punishment. There was never so much as an indictment. This is the government we should be very cautious of. It has no respect for freedom. Check out freedom
